Studio K instructor, Sam Sanders has creatively taken the art of Hula Hooping to a whole new extreme! From grooving with a LED hoop to the beats of dub-step and house artist, Skrillex, to twirling to the sexy sounds of Rihanna and other popular music of today, Sam offers a one-of-a-kind class experience. With her original choreography and superior technique, she is literally giving dance fitness a whole new spin. Just recently, Sam joined Studio K instructor, Manny Rose, in leading her first ever Music Video/Hoop Dance Fusion workshop, where members had the opportunity to learn an exclusive dance/hoop mash-up that was inspired by the “Circus” album by Britney Spears.

With much success and determination, Sam hopes to continue to push the boundaries by pairing Hoop Dancing with other styles, such as Contemporary. Keep watch for an upcoming Hoop Dance/Contemporary Fusion Workshop coming soon!

When she’s not in the studio, Sam works as Web Designer for the organization, People for the Ethical Treatments of Animals (PETA) and also serves as the in-house designer for Studio K. During her free time, Sam enjoys creating and designing new flavors of vegan cupcakes, managing her site www.sofrosted.com, and playing her ukulele.

Congratulations Sam, on being our February Instructor of the Month!

When did you discover your love for dance?

Pretty much the first time I saw a ballerina, I knew that I wanted to dance. Sadly, my Mom told me that ballerinas were too girly and that I should play sports instead. To this day, I still get jealous when I see little girls in their leotards and tutus! I guess it is never too late to learn!

What inspires your choreography?

The music definitely inspires my choreography. Some songs just make me happy and I can’t help but want to dance to them. Also, the hoop sometimes wants to do it’s own thing and I just let it.

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape and why?

I would choose dance any day over a treadmill. I remember the first time I took a Contemporary class I thought to myself, “I didn’t even know I had this muscle, but it is so sore!”

How has dance made an impact on your life?

Dance has definitely made me more confident. If you would have told me a year ago that I would be teaching a dance fitness class, I would have called you absolutely insane! I could barely even Hula Hoop a year ago! I still prefer to blend into the back corner when I take classes, but I’m coming around.

What advice do you have to people who are just beginning to dance, whether it is for the skill or for fitness?

Just start! If you’re shy like me, I understand how incredibly nerve-racking and uncomfortable it can feel at first, but it’s all worth it!

What is your favorite class to teach and why?

Well, considering I only teach Hoop, I would have to say Hoop! I love the look on a person’s face when they finally understand a new trick or move. It always puts me in a good mood.

What do you like most about being a part of the Studio K Family?

The best part of the Studio K Family is dancing! I tried to make up for my lost little girl ballerina years at another adult studio and I was absolutely mortified! My inexperience was pointed out and I was made fun of by the instructor. I swore I’d never try another dance class again, but I’m so glad I did because all of the instructors at Studio K are incredible. They never judge and they always make you feel comfortable and that anything is possible.

If you could do anything else in the world other than dance, what would it be?

Well, since dance isn’t my full time job, I am doing something other than dance. I’m a Web Designer, but if I didn’t have bills to pay, I would love to be a Wedding Planner! So keep me in mind if you’re getting married!

What phrase do you choose to live by?

“Go Go Power Rangers!”

It was about three years ago when Studio K member, Dave Cannalte discovered his passion for dance fitness. Originally deciding to work on cardio strengthening and conditioning, he took his first Zumba class and after that, he was hooked. Since then, Dave has actively made fitness an important factor in his life, incorporating both the gym, as well as our weekly Flash Mob Cardio class into his schedule. He also participates in various flash mobs around the state and last year alone, performed in five of Orlando’s biggest flash mobs events, dancing at various venues including the Mall at Millennia, Lake Eola, The Peabody, and Walt Disney World.

Originally from Racine, Wisconsin, Dave moved to Orlando to pursue new career opportunities in the entertainment industry. Developing his craft and becoming an experienced DJ, Dave now works at Promo Only Inc, a music and video promotion company for DJ’s, nightclubs and other venues within the industry. When he’s not dancing in a flash mob or spinning records, he spends his time relaxing with his two rescue dogs and two cats, along with the company of his close friends.

Congratulations Dave on being our Studio K Member of the Month!

What is your favorite class at Studio K?

Linda’s Flash Mob Cardio class is my favorite class at Studio K. I really love the routines, the music and the people!

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape?

I most definitely think that dance is one of the best ways to stay in shape. It’s a lot of fun and most of the time, I don’t even feel like I’m working out.

What motivational advice can you give someone who is starting a new workout routine?

Well, I guess it would be to find the things that will make your workouts fun and keep you motivated. And just remember, it’s always going to be hard at first, just stick with it and don’t give up. That’s what seems to work for me.

What do you look for in a workout that will keep you coming back for more?

Like I previously mentioned, it’s all about having fun. If you see me with a smile on my face, then I will be back for sure!

If you could tell anyone one thing about being a member of Studio K, what would it be?

Because of Studio K, I have had the opportunity to meet some really wonderful people, as well as join in on some good times and great workouts!

If you could be anything at all in this world, what you would be?

I would be carefree and happy all of the time!

What is one motto you choose to live by?

I live by the most tried and true motto of them all – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

In addition, Florida Hospital has added a Deals Program to the Healthy 100 site, where members receive various discounts and/or promotional offers to local businesses within the health and wellness industry of Central Florida. Available to those within the Florida Hospital network, as well as people within the local community, this free membership enables participants of Healthy 100 to take advantage of various products and services that will in turn, help to meet their objective of working toward a healthier living.

Not only has Bianca successfully taken on this role, she has also established a reputable career as a professional dancer as well. After graduating from the University of Central Florida with her Bachelor’s in Theatre, Bianca landed many opportunities that would showcase her talents. She went on to perform in The Nutcracker with The Sarasota City Ballet, as well as with The Miami City Ballet. Eventually, she took on the role as a back-up dancer for the opening act of the Jonas Brother’s, performed with a dance team at the Orlando Magic’s Basketball Half Time Show and most notably, was a Top Ten Finalist on the hit show, America’s Got Talent. In between performing with Will.i.am and Jennifer Lopez at the American Music Awards, and teaching her choreography and skill set here at the studio, Bianca still finds the time to travel the world through her dance abilities and continues to work at the goals she has yet to conquer. Congratulations Bianca, on being our January Instructor of the Month!

When did you discover your love for dance?

I’ve always loved to dance! I started dancing when I was three, but I realized I had a passion for it when I was a little bit older. At that time, I couldn’t afford to be a “studio kid,” but I worked hard and I did whatever I could to get into a dance class.

What inspires your choreography?

Music and my dance idols are two main factors that really inspire my choreography. I’m that weirdo you’ll see driving in the car jamming out to a song. Also seeing people with whom I look up to and watching them work is such an inspiration as well.

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape and why?

Dance, for me, is the best way to stay in shape. I’m horrible at going to the gym and doing a typical workout. I enjoy dancing so much that I end up forgetting that I’m even exercising.

How has dance impacted your life?

Dance has impacted my life in a huge way. I have been able to do what I love, with people that I love, and travel around the world. It is truly a blessing!

What advice do you have to people who are just beginning to dance, whether it is for the skill or for fitness?

I would tell them not to be scared. People walk into a class thinking that others are watching them or that it’s unacceptable to make mistakes. It’s class, that’s the place to make mistakes. That’s how you learn. Just be open-minded and conquer your own personal goals.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?

It’s hard for me to say what class is my favorite class to teach. If you talk to me after I teach a Jazz class, I’ll say, “I love Jazz, it’s my favorite to teach,” but if you ask me after I teach Hip Hop or Contemporary, I’ll say it’s one of those. As long as everyone’s dancing and enjoying the class, then I’m a happy camper.

What do you like most about being a part of the Studio K Family?

The people, both staff and students, are one of my favorite things about Studio K. As soon as you walk through the doors, the atmosphere is always pleasant. Also, it’s great right before starting a class. I always have good conversation with anyone in the lobby. It makes it a wonderful work environment and a great place to dance.

If you could do anything else in the world other than dance, what would it be?

Well, I’m not sure what I would do other than dancing. I don’t think I’m very good at anything else. If I had to pick, it would probably have something to do with music. Although, sometimes I think that I’m funny enough to be a comedian, but I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who thinks that!

What phrase do you choose to live by?

I am the queen of quotes! I live by so many. One that I absolutely love is, “Never linger in the presence of someone who cannot improve you!” I love it!

What is your favorite class at Studio K?

Wow, it’s hard to pick just one! So far, I’ve loved every class that I’ve taken at Studio K. But some of my favorites that I get to go to the most are: Ballet Rock, Sin City Strut, Music Video Choreography, and Hip-Hop Zumba.

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape?

I definitely believe dance is the best way you can stay in shape. You work every muscle you have, you’re always doing something different, and of course, it’s fun!

What motivational advice can you give someone who is starting a new workout routine?

Find something that’s fun for you to do so it doesn’t feel like working out and don’t give up. If you have a hard time making it through or can’t catch on right away, it’s OK. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.

What do you look for in a workout that will keep you coming back for more?

FUN! If I’m not having fun and enjoying myself, I quit. Of course, I also want something where I feel the burn. I may not always feel it in class, but I definitely feel it the next day.

If you could tell anyone one thing about being a member of Studio K, what would it be?

Sometimes I think we get more of a workout laughing with friends than dancing. Not only is Studio K a great place to exercise with great instructors and a huge variety of classes for dancers of all levels, everyone is also so nice and welcoming that we’ve become a family.

If you could be anything at all in this world, what you would be?

I’ve always wanted Samantha Brown’s job on the Travel Channel. I love traveling and being able to get paid to travel the world and to have experiences that are a “once in a lifetime” thing. It would be amazing!

What is one motto you choose to live by?

“Good things come in small packages.”

Seven years ago, Studio K Instructor, Marigel Haaz, left everything she knew to follow her dream of becoming a professional dancer. After graduating high school, she made the tough decision to move to Orlando, so that she could further her education in dance. In doing so, she attended Valencia Community College and soon became part of the Valencia Dance Theatre, where she had the opportunity to perform under the direction of Lesley Brasseux. She also attended the Orlando Ballet School, and performed in various dance festivals all of over the nation, including the American College Dance Festival in San Francisco, California. With much hard work and dedication, Marigel received her degree in Dance Performance and has been utilizing her knowledge and skill to teach others how to dance and stay fit. As part of Studio K’s Hotel Division Team, Marigel has been teaching various classes for both tourists to the Central Florida area and to hotel employees. She is a tremendous asset to the Studio K Team and we are so proud to have Marigel as our December Instructor of the Month!

When did you discover your love for dance?

My Mom once told me that during an ultrasound, she asked the doctor if I was going to be a soccer player because I used to kick her a lot and the doctor responded: “No, she is going to be a ballerina.” His response says it all.

What inspires your choreography?

When I have to choreograph, I pick out my music first, and depending on what I choose, it just comes naturally. I do try to always incorporate classical movements into my dances. I also love using guitar music or tango, especially music by Astor Piazzola.

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape and why?

Of course! With the many different styles and levels of dance classes today, there is no excuse not to get up and get in shape. Also, each style can be catered to a specific work out goal. For instance, you can take anything from Zumba, which is a great calorie burner to Ballet, which tones and strengthens your muscles. You just have to try different styles and find the one that works out for you.

How has dance impacted your life?

Dance has impacted my life in every single aspect. I moved to another country to continue my studies in dance seven years ago and because of this, I have been able to grow, both professionally and technically. Also, it has really helps me to release stress. I always feel better after I dance.

What advice do you have to people who are just beginning to dance, whether it is for the skill or for fitness?

Never give up. Dance might be challenging, especially if you do not have any experience, but eventually it will get easier.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?

Ballet is my favorite because it is very elegant and royal-like.

If you could do anything else in the world other than dance, what would it be?

I would love to be either an animal trainer or a marine biologist.

What phrase do you choose to live by?

“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.”

Christine Rauch has been dancing and performing for nearly her entire life. She first began dancing with a Tamburitzan ensemble in her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, and continued performing with the eastern European group for 11 years. Soon after, she went on to discover new areas of the arts and eventually fell in love with

Theatre. This led her to attend Seton Hill University where she received a degree in Theatre Performance. She continues to be a fan of the classics – Shakespeare in particular, and dreams of one day getting the chance to perform on stage. Currently, Christine is taking her first step towards her dream by being a part of the Disney College Program, working in “Attractions” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for both Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage and Fantasmic.

Christine is thankful for her support system, consisting of her family, close friends and long time boyfriend. Since coming to Florida, she is proud to have added Studio K to that list, openly admitting that it is “one of the best things about being in Florida” and is very excited to be chosen as December’s Member of the Month. Congratulations Christine, we are so lucky to have you as our member and friend!

What is your favorite class at Studio K?

It’s hard to pick just one class because I enjoy so many, for different reasons. But two of my favorites are Burlesque (now Sin City Strut) with Alicia and Hip Hop Zumba with Manny.

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape?

For me, dance is the best way to stay in shape. It’s fun, but I can also feel the results after a good class.

What motivational advice can you give someone who is starting a new workout routine?

I would advise them to keep going, no matter what. Most people I don’t think, really get the routine the first time around, but if you keep working on it, eventually it will click.

What do you look for in a workout that will keep you coming back for more?

For me, a workout has to be fun. I have a hard time sticking with something if it doesn’t keep me working and smiling.

If you could tell anyone one thing about being a member of Studio K, what would it be?

Being a member of Studio K has been one of the best things about being in Florida for me. It’s a great group of people who just love to dance.

If you could be anything at all in this world, what you would be?

If I could be anything in the world, I would be a stage actor. I fell in love with theatre in high school, and it led me to get my degree in Theatre Performance. It doesn’t matter where I act, just as long as I’m on stage!

What is one motto you choose to live by?

“No day but today because tomorrow is no guarantee.”

What was your first source of interest that led you to wanting to become a photographer and at what age?

As a child that moved around a lot due to my father being in the Navy, I was never able to get too familiar with my surroundings. The few pictures that were taken by my family were the only memories I had of the places where I had lived and visited. In high school, I took a photography class. It was so much fun and it was like second nature to me. At no point did it feel like work. I continued to experiment with the art form in college and naturally always had a camera by my side to make sure I never forgot the beauty or great memories that I was exposed to during some of the best years of my life.

What is the most challenging thing about being a photographer?

The most challenging thing for me, as a photographer, is having people believe in what I do and getting them to realize the importance of capturing moments in life that may never be reproduced.

Is photography a natural skill for you or is it something that you had to study to excel at becoming?

Photography came very natural to me. Everything I know is mostly self-taught. I’ve had very few mentors in my life.

What is your favorite thing to take pictures of and why?

Landscape is my favorite thing to photograph because it’s a direct example of God’s greatness.

What do you enjoy about being a photographer for Studio K?

The Studio K staff is great to work with and their clients are awesome and some of the nicest people you can meet.

Who /What do you draw your inspiration from and what inspires you about it?

Peter Lik is a big inspiration to me. His ability to capture color in its natural form is amazing.

What advice do you have to an aspiring photographer?

Don’t just talk about it, just do it – and care less about the people who don’t understand. They will see our greatness one day.

What would you like for a potential client to remember about you?

I want them to remember that I cared about their special moment when I worked with them. Also, that I did my best to capture it, so that they can admire their photographs and be in awe about their lives for years to come.

What is the motto you choose to live by?

“Words are the least reliable purveyor of truth.”

From there, he went on to join other breakdancers in starting the crew, MIND 180, where they eventually won breaking competitions in both Korea and France. Today, Marcelino continues to develop his craft, building on what he’s learned throughout his professional career and teaches it from the heart, to those who are eager to learn. We are so proud to have him on the Studio K team. Congratulations, Marcelino for being November’s Instructor of the Month!

When did you discover your love for dance?

At age fifteen. I was inspired by my older sister, her friends, and the classic battle scene at the Roxy from the movie, “Beat Street.”

What inspires your choreography?

More than anything, it’s the music. I’m painting a picture, capturing a feeling or an emotion.

Do you find that dance is a great way to stay in shape and why?

Absolutely! I believe dance is an amazing way to live a healthy, active, lifestyle. Dedicate a couple hours a week, and in a month, you’ll know how great it is.

How has dance impacted your life?

Dance is my life. I married this craft 15 years ago and I have no regrets. Dance has been the most positive and rewarding experience ever, and because of dance I have been able to perform in front of thousands, see the world, inspire and educate the youth, meet celebrities, conquer my biggest fears and cry tears of triumph in the face of adversity. I still want more……

What advice do you have to people who are just beginning to dance, whether it is for the skill or for fitness?

If you feel it, do it. In this world, nothing happens overnight. Results require dedication. Don’t give up or cut yourself short.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?

My area of expertise, and the biggest component of my dance career- Breaking.

If you could do anything else in the world other than dance, what would it be?

Contribute a solution to the economic challenges this world is facing for years to come. I believe there are questionable times ahead.

What phrase do you choose to live by?

No regrets. Learn from your choices, good or bad, and keep it moving. Complacency is the killer and people are your most valuable resource. Keep it real with yourself before you check others, hypocrites are the worst!
