We all know and crave the number one byproduct of exercise: weight loss. To be honest, that’s why I started exercising and why most people start. What we don’t realize is how many other ways exercise positively influences our lives.
Besides weight loss, 30 minutes of exercise a day can produce heart-healthy benefits. You have less of a chance of heart disease, stroke, you lessen your risk of diabetes, cancer, and depression. I can definitely vouch for this. When I’m having a rough day, the one thing that I know will turn it around is a good workout. There’s something about the sweat, the endorphins and the sense of accomplishment that comes along with it all that can erase negative feelings and ease the tight hold of depression.
Losing weight takes hard work and dedication. Even if you’re not at the size you want to be yet, exercise provides this feeling of body positivity because you know you’re working toward big goals. If I’m having a day where I’m just feeling fluffy and bad about the skin I’m in, if I take 30 minutes to sweat it immediately turns around the view I have of myself. Suddenly I go from “Wow, I look like crap…” to “DANNNNG, mama! Way to work it!”
People who exercise sleep better! There is always a reason for sleeplessness, whether it is anxiety, depression, body cramps, the list goes on. All of these things are improved upon with exercise, which allows you to sleep better. The Sleep Foundation conducted a study that proved sleep improves by 65% in people who exercise 30 minutes a day. See a trend here? 30 Minutes is the magic number.
I’ve noticed that my relationship with my husband and kids drastically improves when I consistently work out. I’m a relatively high-strung person. My husband actually calls me 0 to 60 (I get frustrated pretty quickly). But, when I feel that frustration coming on, I either take the kids on a long walk or I get in a tough workout. When I come out on the other side, I feel like myself again. If I didn’t have this outlet, I would lash out and that isn’t good for anyone. “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”
